Why people look for a Composer alternative#

Composer is a broker, so your money must sit in a Composer account. Some people want to keep their own broker. Others want different backtest settings, more indicators, or an AI assistant they already use. Composer is also US-only for live trading.

Tactfolio#

Tactfolio is a platform where you build rules-based investing strategies, backtest them on decades of real prices, share them, and run them automatically in your own Alpaca account. You can build by hand in a visual builder or by asking an AI assistant.

Its blocks work much like Composer’s. You can paste a Composer symphony’s JSON into the builder and get a private draft with its backtest. Backtests charge 0.05% on every trade and show a next-day-open line. Tactfolio has a Free plan, and paid plans start at $12 a month. Every feature is free until billing opens. It trades real money only through Alpaca, and only long positions in US-listed stocks and ETFs. Read the full Tactfolio vs Composer comparison.

QuantMage#

QuantMage is a no-code builder for rules-based stock and ETF strategies, which it calls spells. It has many indicators and can import Composer strategies. It trades once a day near the close, through Alpaca, including Alpaca IRAs. The Apprentice plan costs $10 a month and covers building and backtesting. Automated trading needs the Mage plan, at $500 a month or $400 a month billed yearly.

Portfolio123#

Portfolio123 is for people who pick stocks by company data, like earnings and value. You build screens and ranking systems, then backtest them, with no code. It also has machine learning tools. It covers US, Canadian, and European stocks. Paid plans run from $35 to $278 a month. It sends orders to Interactive Brokers or Tradier.

QuantConnect#

QuantConnect is a code-first platform. You write strategies in Python or C#. It covers stocks, options, futures, forex, and crypto, with data down to the tick. It connects to about 20 brokers. It suits programmers, not people who want to avoid code. Read Composer vs QuantConnect or Tactfolio vs QuantConnect.

Option Alpha#

Option Alpha automates options trades, such as credit spreads and iron condors, with no code. Its bots can check the market every minute. If you used Composer for stocks and ETFs, this is a different kind of tool. Read Tactfolio vs Option Alpha.

How to choose#

  • To keep Composer’s style but use your own broker, try Tactfolio or QuantMage. Both trade through Alpaca.
  • To pick single stocks by company data, try Portfolio123.
  • If you code and want every market, try QuantConnect.
  • If you trade options, try Option Alpha.

To weigh two of these head to head, read Composer vs Option Alpha. For the whole field, see the best algo trading platforms.

Whatever you pick, test the same strategy in two places. Backtests can differ because of costs, data, and timing. Why past results mislead explains what to watch for.

Common questions#

Is there a free alternative to Composer?#

It depends on what you need. Tactfolio’s Free plan automates 1 strategy in your own Alpaca account, and every feature is free until billing opens. Composer’s own Starter plan is also free for one automated strategy.

Can I move my Composer symphonies to another platform?#

Yes, to some. Tactfolio and QuantMage both import Composer JSON. In Composer, copy the symphony’s JSON, then paste it into the other tool.

Is there a Composer alternative that works with Schwab or Fidelity?#

QuantConnect and Option Alpha connect to Charles Schwab. Option Alpha says it does not support Fidelity. Tactfolio and QuantMage trade real money only through Alpaca.
