What is QuantConnect?#
QuantConnect is a cloud platform where you write, backtest, and run trading algorithms in code. A backtest is a test of rules on past prices. QuantConnect’s engine is called LEAN, and it is open source. You can run it in your browser or on your own computer.
QuantConnect says it has a community of 554,000 quants. It also says more than 375,000 live strategies have run on it since 2012. Those are its own numbers, from its homepage on October 16, 2026.
What is Tactfolio?#
Tactfolio is a platform where you build rules-based investing strategies, backtest them on decades of real prices, share them, and run them automatically in your own Alpaca account. You can build by hand in a visual builder or by asking an AI assistant.
A Tactfolio strategy is a small tree of blocks, so you can do quant trading without code. One block might say “hold SPY while it is above its 200-day average, else hold bonds.” The builder guide shows every block.
How you build a strategy#
On QuantConnect, you write code. You need to know Python or C#, and you work in a code editor in the browser or on your computer. This gives you full control. You can model almost any idea, if you can code it.
On Tactfolio, you click blocks together. Four kinds cover most ideas: tickers, weights, if/else conditions, and rank. The backtest runs again each time you change a rule. You never write code.
So the real question is whether you code. If you do, QuantConnect can do more. If you don’t, QuantConnect is hard to start with, and Tactfolio is built for you.
Backtests and data#
QuantConnect has deeper data. Its US stock data starts in January 1998 and goes down to single trades (tick data). It also has options data from 2010 and futures data from 2009. Its models cover fills, slippage, fees, margin, and short selling. Second and tick data need a paid plan.
Tactfolio uses daily prices for US-listed stocks and funds, with dividends reinvested. Every trade pays a cost of 0.05%. Each backtest also shows a second line that trades at the next day’s open, plus “reality checks” at higher costs. Crypto perps on Hyperliquid use Hyperliquid’s own hourly or daily prices, with funding included. What a backtest simulates lists every assumption. For young funds, an optional, clearly labeled simulated history reaches further back.
Live trading and brokers#
QuantConnect is not a broker. It connects your code to a broker you choose. Its docs list about 20, including Interactive Brokers, Charles Schwab, Tastytrade, Alpaca, Webull, Coinbase, and Kraken. Live trading needs a live node, and the free plan has none.
Tactfolio is not a broker either. Trade runs a strategy in a paper account with pretend money, or in your own Alpaca account with your own API keys. Each strategy trades only the starting balance you give it. It never touches the other things you hold there. Tactfolio places its trades once a day, near the market close.
AI assistants#
Both platforms let an AI assistant do the building. QuantConnect has Mia, an AI agent that writes code, runs backtests, and fixes errors. It also has an MCP server for tools like Claude Code and Cursor. MCP is a standard way for AI assistants to use other apps. QuantConnect’s MCP server needs a paid agent node, from $24 a month.
Tactfolio’s MCP server is free with your account. You describe an idea in a sentence. Your assistant builds the strategy, runs backtests, and saves a draft you can check in the builder. Setup steps are in Use Tactfolio from your AI assistant.
Pricing#
QuantConnect has a free plan with one backtest node and no live trading. Paid seats cost $10 to $96 a month. Most people also pay for compute nodes. Its ready-made bundles cost $84 a month for one researcher and $168 for a team. Some data sets cost extra. These are its prices as of October 16, 2026.
Tactfolio has three plans. Free costs $0. It includes unlimited building and backtests and 1 live strategy in your own Alpaca account. Plus costs $12 a month or $99 a year and runs 10 live strategies. Pro costs $29 a month or $249 a year and runs up to 100 at once. Paid plans are not open yet, so every feature is free until billing opens. See Tactfolio pricing.
Price is not the main reason to pick one over the other. QuantConnect is built for people who write code, and Tactfolio is a no-code builder.
What are the best QuantConnect alternatives for people who don’t code?#
If you don’t code, these tools let you build and test strategies without Python or C#. Facts were checked on each tool’s own pages on October 16, 2026.

Common questions#
Is QuantConnect free?#
QuantConnect has a free plan with backtesting and research. It does not include live trading. Paid seats start at $10 a month, and most users also pay for compute nodes. These prices were checked on October 16, 2026.
Do I need to code to use QuantConnect?#
Yes. QuantConnect strategies are written in Python or C#. Its AI agent, Mia, can write the code for you, but you still work with code. Tactfolio needs no code at all.
Can Tactfolio trade options or crypto like QuantConnect?#
Not options. Tactfolio can backtest crypto perpetual futures on Hyperliquid, but it doesn’t trade them with real money yet. If you need options, futures, forex, or live crypto trading, QuantConnect is the better fit.
Which brokers does each one support?#
QuantConnect lists about 20 brokers, including Interactive Brokers, Schwab, and Alpaca. For stocks and ETFs, Tactfolio supports Alpaca only, in a paper or live account with your own API keys.
Is there a QuantConnect alternative without code?#
Yes. Tactfolio is one. You build strategies from visual blocks, backtest them on daily prices, and can run them in your own Alpaca account. It covers long-only stock and ETF strategies, not every market QuantConnect covers.
