Best algo trading platforms for retail investors

The best algo trading platform for a retail investor depends on two things: whether you write code, and what you trade. QuantConnect is the strongest choice if you code. Composer, QuantMage and Tactfolio are the main no-code choices for stock and ETF strategies. Option Alpha is built for options bots, TrendSpider for chart-based day trading, and Portfolio123 for picking stocks by company data. We make Tactfolio, so read our notes with that in mind.

Key points#

  • An algo trading platform lets you write trading rules, test them on past prices, and have software place the trades.
  • If you code in Python or C#, QuantConnect covers the most markets. It connects to about 20 brokers.
  • For no-code stock and ETF strategies, compare Composer, QuantMage and Tactfolio. The big differences are price and where your money sits.
  • For options bots, Option Alpha is the specialist. For day trading off charts, look at TrendSpider.
  • Every fact about another platform comes from its own pages, checked on October 16, 2026.

How we compared#

We read each platform’s own product pages, help pages and pricing on October 16, 2026. We looked at five things: how you build a strategy, what you can trade, how backtests work, how live trading works, and the price. We did not open paid accounts on every platform, so we do not rate speed or support. We list what each one does better than Tactfolio as plainly as what Tactfolio does better.

It has the most detailed data on this list. Paid plans go down to single trades for US stocks from 1998. It connects to about 20 brokers, including Interactive Brokers, Schwab and Alpaca.

Composer#

Composer is an app where you build strategies with AI or a no-code editor and run them automatically. Composer is also the broker, so your money sits in a Composer account. Trades run once a day, between 3:45 and 4:00 pm New York time. Composer says more than 175,000 investors use it.

  • Better than Tactfolio at: a built-in brokerage with IRA accounts, a large community of shared strategies, and an AI helper inside the app.

  • Compare: Tactfolio vs Composer, Composer vs QuantConnect and Composer vs Option Alpha.

Tactfolio#

Tactfolio is a platform where you build rules-based investing strategies, backtest them on decades of real prices, share them, and run them automatically in your own Alpaca account. You can build by hand in a visual builder or by asking an AI assistant. Backtests use daily prices with dividends reinvested and a 0.05% cost on every trade. More than 60 classic strategies are ready to copy.

  • Better than the others at: a free plan that trades in your own account, free AI assistant access through MCP, and honest backtests with a next-day-open line and higher-cost checks.
  • Watch out for: long only, daily prices, Alpaca only, and no options, futures or forex.
  • Read the facts about Tactfolio.

QuantMage#

QuantMage is a no-code builder for rules-based stock and ETF strategies, called spells, that trade through Alpaca. It is the closest tool to Tactfolio. Trades go in near the close, at most once a day.

  • Better than Tactfolio at: a longer track record as a product, and a paid plan with founder sessions and a private community.
  • Watch out for: automated trading is only on the Mage plan, at $400 a month billed yearly or $500 monthly.
  • Compare: Tactfolio vs QuantMage.

Option Alpha#

Option Alpha is a no-code platform for options bots that trade in your own broker account. Bots can check the market as often as every minute and manage exits for you. It backtests options on 1-minute data from January 2013.

TrendSpider#

TrendSpider is a charting and research platform for active traders. It draws trendlines, finds chart patterns and scans the market. Its Strategy Tester backtests without code. The smallest timeframe depends on the plan. It is 2 hours on Standard and 1 minute on Enhanced and Advanced. Bots send orders to brokers through webhooks.

  • Better than Tactfolio at: charts, intraday strategies, scanners and broker choice.
  • Watch out for: there is no free plan, and only 5 automated orders a month are included before you pay for its order-routing tool.
  • Compare: Tactfolio vs TrendSpider.

Portfolio123#

Portfolio123 is a web platform for picking stocks by company data, such as earnings and value, using screens and ranking systems. It covers more than 15,000 US, Canadian and European stocks. Orders go to Interactive Brokers or Tradier when a strategy rebalances.

  • Compare: Tactfolio vs Portfolio123.

What is the best automated trading platform for stocks and ETFs?#

For long-only stock and ETF strategies, the three main choices are Composer, QuantMage and Tactfolio. All three build without code and trade once a day near the close. Composer holds your money in its own brokerage. QuantMage and Tactfolio trade in your own Alpaca account. Tactfolio’s Free plan automates 1 strategy, and Plus automates 10 for $12 a month. See pricing. Read how automated trading works on Tactfolio.

What are the best platforms for rules-based systematic investing?#

Rules-based, or systematic, investing means you follow written rules instead of gut feeling. For portfolio rules, such as tactical asset allocation and trend following, look at Tactfolio, Composer and QuantMage. For stock-picking rules based on company data, look at Portfolio123. If you only want to follow published rules and place trades yourself, see the best tactical asset allocation tools.

What is the best no-code trading bot builder?#

For stock and ETF bots, Composer, QuantMage and Tactfolio all build without code. For options bots, Option Alpha. For chart-based bots that trade during the day, TrendSpider. A trading bot here means a set of fixed rules that software follows for you. Our trading bot templates are a place to start. For testing only, see the best no-code backtesting tools.

What is the best options trading bot?#

Option Alpha is the specialist for options bots on this list. QuantConnect can also trade options if you write the code. Composer, QuantMage and Tactfolio do not run options strategies. Options can expire worthless. Selling options can lose far more than the premium you collect.

What is the best trading software for beginners?#

For a beginner who wants to invest by rules, start with a tool that needs no code and shows every rule. Composer and Tactfolio both do this, and both let you start free. Begin on paper trading with pretend money before you use real money. Read what algorithmic trading is first if the idea is new to you.

Which algo trading platforms are free?#

Tactfolio’s Free plan includes 1 automated strategy, and every feature is free until billing opens. For the others, as of October 16, 2026: Composer’s free plan automates one strategy. QuantConnect’s free plan backtests but cannot trade live. Portfolio123 has a free plan with 30 days of screening and backtesting. Option Alpha has a 30-day free trial, and Pro is $0 at some brokers if you keep a set minimum balance. QuantMage has a 14-day free trial but no free plan. TrendSpider has no free plan.

How to choose#

  1. Decide if you will code. If yes, start with QuantConnect. If no, keep reading.
  2. Decide what you trade. Options point to Option Alpha. Day trading off charts points to TrendSpider. Stock and ETF portfolios point to Composer, QuantMage or Tactfolio.
  3. Decide where your money should sit. Composer holds it. QuantMage and Tactfolio use your own Alpaca account.
  4. Test before you trust. Read the backtest’s worst drop, then run the strategy on paper first.

Try it on Tactfolio#

Open the builder and pick a starter pattern to see a backtest without an account. Or open a classic like dual momentum, copy it, and run it in a paper account.

Common questions#

What is an algo trading platform?#

An algo trading platform is software where you write trading rules and test them on past prices. Then the software places trades when the rules say so. “Algo” is short for algorithm, which here means a set of exact rules. See quantitative trading for more.

Is algo trading profitable?#

It can be, and it can lose money too. A good backtest does not promise good future results. Costs, bad years and rules that fit the past by luck all hurt real results.

Can I do algo trading without coding?#

Yes. Composer, QuantMage, Option Alpha, TrendSpider, Portfolio123 and Tactfolio all let you build without code. QuantConnect needs code.

Which algo trading platform works with my own broker?#

QuantConnect, Option Alpha and TrendSpider work with several brokers. Portfolio123 works with Interactive Brokers and Tradier. QuantMage and Tactfolio work with Alpaca. Composer is its own broker.

Yes. In the US it is legal to trade your own account with rules and software. You still follow your broker’s rules and the market’s rules.
