Best no-code backtesting tools: 7 compared
A no-code backtesting tool lets you test a trading or investing idea on past prices without writing a program. You click blocks, fill in forms, or type the rule in plain English. We compared seven of them. Each one fits a different kind of idea, so the right pick depends on what you want to test. We make Tactfolio, so read our notes with that in mind. Every fact about the other tools comes from their own websites, checked on October 16, 2026.
How we compared#
We read each tool’s own pages, help docs, and pricing pages. We looked at five things. What kind of idea does it test? How do you build? What data does it use? Can it trade for you? What does it cost? For two of these tools, we also ran the same strategy side by side. Portfolio Visualizer and Tactfolio agreed within half a point a year on Faber’s 10-month rule. Best portfolio backtesting tools shows the full results.

Tactfolio#
Tactfolio is a platform where you build rules-based investing strategies, backtest them on decades of real prices, share them, and run them automatically in your own Alpaca account. You can build by hand in a visual builder or by asking an AI assistant.
You click blocks together: tickers, weights, if/else conditions, and rank. Rules can read prices, indicators, the VIX, and US economic data. Every Tactfolio backtest charges 0.05% a trade and shows a second line that trades at the next day’s open. Stock and ETF strategies are long only and trade once a day. Tactfolio can also backtest crypto perps on Hyperliquid, but those don’t trade real money yet. You can import Composer and QuantMage strategies.
Composer#
Composer is a no-code app for building and trading stock and ETF strategies. You build with blocks or by chatting with its AI. Backtests use daily adjusted closes, up to 30 years back in the editor. Building and backtesting are free on every plan. To trade, you open a Composer brokerage account, because Composer is also the broker. Read Tactfolio vs Composer.
QuantMage#
QuantMage is a block builder much like Composer’s. Its rules can read many market series, such as the MOVE bond index, the dollar index, and market breadth. Building and backtesting cost $10 a month, or $8 billed yearly. Automated trading through Alpaca needs the Mage plan, at $500 a month or $400 a month billed yearly. Read QuantMage alternatives.
Portfolio123#
Portfolio123 is built for picking stocks by company data, like earnings and value. You write screens and ranking rules as spreadsheet-like formulas, with no code. It has more than 4,300 ready-made factors. Backtests use point-in-time data, so they only see numbers that were public on each date. It covers US, Canadian, and European stocks. Paid plans run from $35 to $278 a month.
TrendSpider#
TrendSpider is a charting platform for active traders. Its Strategy Tester lets you pick conditions from menus or type them in plain English. Tests run on bars from 1 minute to yearly, on one symbol or up to 510 at once. You set your own trading cost. Bots send orders through webhooks, mainly SignalStack. There is no free plan. Read Tactfolio vs TrendSpider.
Option Alpha#
Option Alpha is a no-code platform for options bots. Its backtester uses 1-minute options data back to 2013, mainly on SPX, SPY, QQQ, IWM, and XSP. Bots open and manage spreads during the day at Tradier, TradeStation, tastytrade, or Schwab. Pro costs $149 a month, $99 a month billed yearly, or $0 with a qualifying broker account. Read Tactfolio vs Option Alpha.
Portfolio Visualizer#
Portfolio Visualizer is a research site. You fill in forms to test a fixed mix of funds or asset classes, or a preset timing model like dual momentum. Most tests use monthly data, with asset classes back to 1972. It also has Monte Carlo and optimizers. You can’t write new rules, and it does not trade. Read Tactfolio vs Portfolio Visualizer.

Common questions#
Can I backtest a strategy without coding?#
Yes. All seven tools on this page work without code. Tactfolio, Composer, and QuantMage use blocks. Portfolio123 uses formulas. TrendSpider lets you type a rule in plain English. Portfolio Visualizer uses forms.
Is there a free no-code backtesting tool?#
Yes. Tactfolio has a Free plan that includes 1 automated strategy, and every feature is free until billing opens. Composer lets you build and backtest for free. Portfolio Visualizer has a free plan with limits. Portfolio123’s free tier includes 30 days of backtesting.
Can a no-code tool trade my strategy automatically?#
Some can. Tactfolio trades in your own Alpaca account. Composer trades as your broker. QuantMage, Portfolio123, TrendSpider, and Option Alpha can send orders on some plans. Portfolio Visualizer is for research only.
Are no-code backtests less accurate than coded ones?#
Not by themselves. Accuracy depends on the data, trading costs, and timing a tool assumes, not on how you build the rule. Check whether a tool charges a cost on each trade and when it assumes you trade. What a backtest simulates lists Tactfolio’s assumptions.
