About Tactfolio

Tactfolio is a platform where you build rules-based investing strategies, backtest them on decades of real prices, share them, and run them automatically in your own Alpaca account. You can build by hand in a visual builder or by asking an AI assistant.

  • You write your investing rule down as a small tree of blocks.
  • You see how that rule would have done on real prices, bad years included.
  • You can share it, copy other people’s rules, or run it on a schedule.
  • Everything is free while we build. Pricing comes with live trading.

For every fact on one page, see Tactfolio facts.

Why does Tactfolio exist?#

Tactfolio exists so you can test an investing rule before you trust it with money. Most people who invest on their own already follow a rule. It may only live in their head: “buy the index and never sell”, or “move to bonds when things look bad”.

A rule in your head is hard to check. Tactfolio lets you write it down exactly. Then it replays the rule on years of daily prices and shows you what it would have asked of you. That includes the worst drop along the way, not only the final number.

Tactfolio started as a tool its founder built for their own investing. We think many people who invest on their own want the same things: clear rules, honest tests, and no black box.

What can you do on Tactfolio today?#

You can build, test, share and run long-only strategies on US stocks and funds. You can also test strategies on crypto perpetual futures. Here is what is live now:

  • Build. The strategy builder turns a rule into a tree of blocks: what to hold, how much, and when to switch. The builder guide covers every block.
  • Backtest. A backtest replays your rules on past daily prices of US-listed stocks and funds. Our methodology lists every assumption it makes.
  • Learn from the classics. Our library of classic strategies has more than 60 published strategies, each with its source, its rules and results that update every day.
  • Share and copy. Members publish strategies to Discover. Anyone can open a public strategy and see its rules and backtest. With a free account you can copy it and change it.
  • Use an AI assistant. You can connect an assistant such as Claude Code or Codex. It can build, test and save strategies in your account. See how to connect an AI assistant.
  • Run it. A paper account runs your strategy with pretend money at real prices. You can also connect your own Alpaca account, paper or live, with your own API keys.
  • Try crypto perps. A perpetual future is a crypto contract that tracks a price and never expires. Strategies can hold perps on Hyperliquid, a crypto exchange. You can backtest them and run them with pretend money on Hyperliquid’s test network. Real-money trading on Hyperliquid is off.

What is Tactfolio not?#

Tactfolio is a research and automation tool. It is not a broker, a fund or an adviser.

  • Not a broker. We never hold your money. If you trade, your money stays in your own Alpaca account.
  • Not advice. We do not tell you what to buy or sell. Every strategy on the site comes from rules that you, your AI assistant or another author wrote.
  • Not a promise. A backtest shows how rules would have done on past prices. It cannot tell you what happens next.
  • Not everything. Strategies are long only. They hold stocks, funds, crypto perps or cash. They cannot sell short or borrow. Stock and fund strategies run on daily prices, not during the day.

How do we decide what to publish?#

We publish what a reader can check. We follow four rules on every page:

  1. Show the bad part early. We put drawdowns next to returns. A drawdown is how far a portfolio falls from its last high point.
  2. List every assumption. Costs, timing and data limits are written down in our methodology.
  3. Cite the source. Facts link to the paper, regulator or fund issuer they came from.
  4. Fix mistakes in the open. When we change a fact, the page shows a new “Updated” date.

The editorial policy explains how we write, check and correct our pages.

Who writes Tactfolio’s pages?#

The Tactfolio research team writes our guides and strategy pages. The byline at the top of each page says who wrote it and when it was last updated. When a named person writes or checks a page, their name and a link to their profile appear there.

Community strategies in Discover are different. Members write them and publish them on their own. We do not review them before they go live. The Tactfolio Score ranks them by the same rules for everyone.

How can you contact us?#

Write to us from the Support page. You do not need an account. We reply by email. Members can also see their requests and our replies there.

Common questions#

Is Tactfolio a broker?#

No. Tactfolio never holds your money. When you trade, your strategy places orders in your own Alpaca account with your own API keys. Alpaca is the broker.

Does Tactfolio give investment advice?#

No. Tactfolio shows how rules would have behaved on past prices. It does not know your goals, your taxes or how much risk you can take. Decisions about your money are yours.

How much does Tactfolio cost?#

Everything is free while we build. Pricing comes with live trading.

Who can see my strategies?#

Only you, and any AI assistant you connect, until you publish. Published versions are public and anyone can view and copy them. See publishing and sharing.
