Publishing and sharing

Everything you build is private until you publish it. Publishing gives a strategy a public page with its rules and backtest, and a place in the Discover, the list of everyone's published strategies. People publish to show their work, to get credit when others build on it, and to let time test it: from the day you publish, every public strategy runs on prices that didn't exist when its rules were written.

Publishing is optional, and two parts of it can't be undone, so they come first.

What you can't take back#

  • Published versions are permanent. Anyone can view, copy, and build on them, and you can't delete a published strategy or make it private again. You can retire it, which takes it out of Discover (see below).
  • Your handle becomes permanent once you've published anything.

Everything else, including the description, can change later.

Your public handle#

Your handle is the name your published strategies appear under, and their links use it: tactfolio.com/s/yourname/your-strategy. You choose it when you create your account, or later in Settings. A pseudonym is fine.

A handle is 3 to 30 lowercase letters, numbers, or hyphens, starting and ending with a letter or number. A few names, such as admin and support, are reserved. Until you publish, you can change it in Settings as often as you like.

Publish a strategy#

  1. Save your changes. Publishing works from a saved revision, never from unsaved edits.
  2. Choose Publish in the editor's toolbar. If you have no handle yet, you'll be asked to choose one first.
  3. Write a Description: what the strategy holds, when it changes, and the idea behind it. It's the first thing a visitor reads.
  4. Check the plan. If the strategy uses other strategies of yours, they're listed under Also publishes the strategies it uses, because a public strategy must show every part of itself. Any component set to Latest is pinned to the exact version being published, so this version never changes. Your draft keeps those pins until a block offers Follow latest after you edit that strategy again.
  5. Choose Publish v1.

The popover then shows the public link, with Copy public link. The link's last part comes from the strategy's name at first publication and stays the same even if you rename the strategy later.

A good description says what problem the strategy solves, where the idea came from (credit your sources), and when it does badly. Readers trust an author who names the weak spots first.

Publish a new version#

Keep saving as you work; saves stay private, and the toolbar shows Unpublished changes. When you're ready to share them, choose Publish update. The new version gets the next number and an optional What changed note, such as "Switched the bond sleeve from TLT to IEF", which visitors see in the version list.

Each version keeps its own address. tactfolio.com/s/yourname/your-strategy always shows the current version, and .../v1 always shows version 1. When you discuss specific rules somewhere else, link the numbered version, so the link keeps matching what you wrote.

The description belongs to the strategy, not to a version: editing it and choosing Update description changes it on every version's page.

Retire a strategy#

To take a strategy out of Discover, open the Publish popover and choose Retire…, then Retire from Discover. The option appears once every saved change is published. A retired strategy keeps working for everyone who already relies on it: its link, its versions, copies people made, and strategies that use it. Its page is marked Retired.

To bring it back, choose Return to Discover, or publish a new version.

Strategies you've never published can be deleted from your workspace.

What visitors see#

A strategy's public page works without an account. It shows:

  • Your handle, linking to your profile, the version number and date, the name, and the description.
  • A facts line: the Tactfolio Score, the rebalance schedule, the tickers, and, once they're above zero, how many copies people made and how many strategies use it.
  • The backtest over all history, 10 years, or 5 years, on real prices or with simulated history. Signed-in visitors can test any other window.
  • An Out of sample line on the growth chart at this version's first close after publication. Everything to its right happened after the rules were fixed, so it can't have been tuned. It's the part of the chart that tells you the most.
  • The rules, as the exact tree, and the list of versions with their notes.

Shared links unfurl with a preview of the growth chart, so a link posted in a forum or chat shows what it's about.

Discover#

Discover lists every published strategy that hasn't been retired, with its score, growth, volatility, drawdown, Sharpe, and Calmar over up to ten years. It's ordered by the Tactfolio Score by default: from 0 to 100, how a strategy is expected to compare with the others from here on, once what its backtest owes to hindsight is taken out. A new strategy shows no score until its backtest evidence is ready.

You can search by strategy, author, or ticker, filter by rebalance schedule, and sort by any metric. Signed in, you can show only strategies you've starred or authors you follow.

The classic strategies, published by the Tactfolio team with articles on each, are in Discover alongside everyone else's.

Stars, follows, and profiles#

  • Star a strategy to keep it on your list, under Starred on your own profile. The count is public; the list of what you starred is yours alone.
  • Follow an author from their profile, at tactfolio.com/u/handle, to find their strategies in Discover. The profile shows when they joined, their published strategies, and how many stars, followers, and copies their work has earned.

There are no comments and no feed. Discussion belongs where you already talk about investing; bring a link.

Build on someone else's work#

Two ways, and both keep credit with the original author:

  • Copy to my strategies makes a private draft from the exact version you were looking at. Change anything you like. If you publish your copy, its page says who it was copied from, and the original counts the copy.
  • Use it as a building block. Add a Strategy block in the builder and pick a published strategy. It's pinned to one exact version, so the author's later changes never alter your results without you knowing. When they publish a new version, the block offers Update to vN with their note, and your workspace marks the strategy Update available.

AI assistants can build, test, and save in your account, but they can't publish, retire, star, or follow. Those stay with you, in the app.
