## How risky is TIP compared with the S&P 500?

Measured from October 2021 to October 2026, on the days both traded.

- **Beta 0.07.** When the S&P 500 moved 1% in a day, TIP tended to move about 0.07%.
- **Correlation 0.20.** TIP moved mostly on its own, apart from the S&P 500.
- **Up and down months.** In months the S&P 500 rose, TIP rose 19% as much on average. In months it fell, TIP fell 34% as much.

| Measure | TIP | S&P 500 (SPY) |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Return per year | −0.1% | 12.8% |
| Volatility | 6.2% | 17.1% |
| Worst drop | −14.5% | −24.5% |
| Sharpe ratio | 0.02 | 0.79 |
| Sortino ratio | 0.03 | 1.15 |
| Calmar ratio | 0.00 | 0.52 |

Volatility is how much the price swings in a year. The Sharpe ratio is return per unit of volatility, the Sortino ratio counts only the falls, and the Calmar ratio is the return per year over the worst drop. Higher ratios mean more return for the risk taken.

## Is TIP above its 200-day average?

TIP closed 1.3% below its 200-day average on October 16, 2026. A rule that holds TIP only above that average would be out of it today.

- Its 50-day average is 1.0% below its 200-day average.
- It closed 2.5% below its highest close of the last 52 weeks.

A moving average is the average close over the last so many days. Trend rules such as [the 10-month moving average strategy](https://tactfolio.com/strategies/faber-10-month-moving-average.md) hold a fund only while it is above one. You can [build that rule for TIP](https://tactfolio.com/builder) and backtest it in a minute.

## What was TIP's worst drop?

A drawdown is how far a fund falls from its last high point. TIP's worst fall was −14.5%, from November 9, 2021 to October 6, 2023. It got back to that high on February 27, 2026. On October 16, 2026 it was 2.5% below its highest close.

| Drop | Started | Bottom | Back to the high | Fall took | Recovery took |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| −14.5% | Nov 9, 2021 | Oct 6, 2023 | Feb 27, 2026 | 23 months | 2.4 years |
| −14.4% | Jul 9, 2008 | Nov 24, 2008 | Sep 30, 2009 | 5 months | 10 months |
| −11.2% | Mar 6, 2020 | Mar 18, 2020 | Apr 28, 2020 | 12 days | 41 days |
| −11.1% | Dec 10, 2012 | Sep 5, 2013 | Mar 20, 2019 | 9 months | 5.5 years |
| −6.3% | Mar 17, 2004 | May 10, 2004 | Sep 22, 2004 | 2 months | 4 months |

Big drops are normal for some funds. They matter because selling during a drop locks in the loss.
