# TIP vs VTIP: fees, holdings and returns compared

> TIP vs VTIP: what each ETF holds, what it costs, and how both did over the same dates, with yearly returns and worst drops.

TIP holds US Treasury Inflation-Protected Securities of all maturities. VTIP holds only TIPS that mature in under five years. VTIP swings much less when interest rates change, and charges a lower fee. Over the same dates since October 2012, TIP returned about 1.5% a year and VTIP returned about 2.2% a year.

## Key points

- VTIP costs less: 0.03% a year against 0.18%.
- TIP started trading in December 2003. VTIP started in October 2012.
- Worst drops since 2012: TIP −14.5%, VTIP −6.3%.

## What is the difference between TIP and VTIP?

Both protect against inflation the same way. The difference is how long the bonds run. Longer TIPS in TIP lose more value when real interest rates rise, as in 2022. VTIP's short TIPS track current inflation more closely and move less with rates, so its price has been much steadier.

## Which fell further in bad times?

A drawdown is how far a fund falls from its last high point. TIP's worst fall was −14.5%, from November 9, 2021 to October 6, 2023. It got back to that high on February 27, 2026.

VTIP's worst fall was −6.3%, from March 5, 2020 to March 18, 2020. It got back to that high on June 5, 2020.

Their daily moves had a correlation of 0.78. A correlation of 1 means two funds always move up and down together. Near 0 means they move on their own. So they often move together, but not always.

## The details

Both funds use Tactfolio's stored daily prices, adjusted for splits, with dividends reinvested. They are compared only on days both traded, starting the later fund's first day, so neither gets a head start. Correlation uses daily returns over the same days.
