# RSP vs VOO: fees, holdings and returns compared

> RSP vs VOO: what each ETF holds, what it costs, and how both did over the same dates, with yearly returns and worst drops.

RSP and VOO hold the same about 500 companies from the S&P 500. VOO weights each company by its size, so a few giants make up a big part of it. RSP puts about the same amount in each company, so the smallest count as much as the largest. Over the same dates since September 2010, RSP returned about 12.7% a year and VOO returned about 14.8% a year.

## What is the difference between RSP and VOO?

The companies are the same and the weights are not. In VOO, the largest companies, many of them in technology, carry most of the weight. In RSP, each company starts near 0.2% of the fund, and RSP resets those weights every three months. That gives RSP more in mid-size companies and in industries such as industrials and utilities, and less in the largest tech names. When the giants lead, VOO tends to do better. When the rest of the market catches up, RSP tends to. RSP also charges a higher fee.

## Which fell further in bad times?

A drawdown is how far a fund falls from its last high point. RSP's worst fall was −39.0%, from February 12, 2020 to March 23, 2020. It got back to that high on November 9, 2020.

VOO's worst fall was −34.0%, from February 19, 2020 to March 23, 2020. It got back to that high on August 10, 2020.

Their daily moves had a correlation of 0.95. A correlation of 1 means two funds always move up and down together. Near 0 means they move on their own. So holding both adds little variety.

## The details

Both funds use Tactfolio's stored daily prices, adjusted for splits, with dividends reinvested. They are compared only on days both traded, starting the later fund's first day, so neither gets a head start. Correlation uses daily returns over the same days.
