Testfolio (testfol.io) is a free website for backtesting portfolios on daily data. Good testfol.io alternatives are Portfolio Visualizer, Tactfolio, PortfolioCharts, AllocateSmartly, and Composer. Pick Portfolio Visualizer for deep analysis of a fixed mix. Pick Tactfolio or Composer if you want a strategy to trade for you. We make Tactfolio, so read our notes with that in mind. Every fact about the other tools comes from their own websites, checked on October 16, 2026.

## Key points

- Testfolio is research only. It does not trade, and the site does not name the company behind it.
- Portfolio Visualizer is the closest match. It has more analysis tools, but most of its backtests use monthly data.
- Tactfolio and Composer can run a strategy for you. Tactfolio trades in your own Alpaca account. Composer is itself the broker.
- PortfolioCharts and AllocateSmartly are for planning and following published strategies, not for building your own.
- Testfolio's AI access (MCP) comes only with its $100 a month Max plan. Tactfolio's is free with an account.

## What Testfolio does well

Testfolio is hard to beat for a free backtest. Its free tools use daily data and the full history of every fund. Its simulated tickers reach far back, such as SPY to 1885. A free account adds a tactical backtester, factor regression, and leveraged ETF tools. Paid plans cost $15, $30, or $100 a month, or less if you pay yearly. They raise the limits on optimizers and [Monte Carlo](https://tactfolio.com/trading-tools/monte-carlo-simulation.md) runs and add email alerts.

Tactfolio uses a frozen copy of Testfolio's simulated tickers for part of its [simulated history](https://tactfolio.com/docs/simulated-history.md). We think it is a good tool.

## Why people look for a testfol.io alternative

- **It does not trade.** We found no broker link or paper trading on the site. Its terms say its AI tools do not place trades or move money. You place every trade yourself.
- **You can't write any rule you like.** Its tactical tools use forms with signals and ranked lists. There is no visual builder or code.
- **AI access costs $100 a month.** Its MCP server, which lets an AI assistant run its tools, is only on the Max plan.
- **The company is not named.** The terms point to Illinois law, but the site gives no company name or address.
- **Prices may rise.** Its Pro prices are "early member" rates, and the site says new members should expect higher rates.

## Portfolio Visualizer

Portfolio Visualizer is the classic tool for testing a mix of funds or asset classes. It has backtests, Monte Carlo, optimization, efficient frontiers, factor regression, and preset timing models. Its asset-class data starts in 1972. Most backtests use monthly returns, so the [worst drop](https://tactfolio.com/learn/max-drawdown.md) can look a little milder than on daily data.

The free plan allows up to 15 assets with limited history. Paid plans cost $30 or $55 a month, billed yearly. It does not trade. Read [Tactfolio vs Portfolio Visualizer](https://tactfolio.com/comparisons/tactfolio-vs-portfolio-visualizer.md).

## Tactfolio

Tactfolio is a platform where you build rules-based investing strategies, [backtest](https://tactfolio.com/learn/backtesting-explained.md) them on decades of real prices, share them, and run them automatically in your own [Alpaca account](https://tactfolio.com/alpaca-trading.md). You can build by hand in a visual builder or by asking an [AI assistant](https://tactfolio.com/ai-trading.md).

The main difference from Testfolio is that you write any rule you want from blocks: if/else conditions, rank, and filters. Then Tactfolio can [trade the rule for you](https://tactfolio.com/automated-trading.md), once a day near the close. Backtests use daily prices and charge 0.05% on every trade. It covers long-only strategies on US-listed stocks and ETFs. It has free tools for [Monte Carlo](https://tactfolio.com/trading-tools/monte-carlo-simulation.md), the [efficient frontier](https://tactfolio.com/trading-tools/efficient-frontier.md), and a [portfolio optimizer](https://tactfolio.com/trading-tools/portfolio-optimizer.md). Testfolio has more research tools, such as tax and factor reports.

To test a fixed mix first, try our [portfolio backtest](https://tactfolio.com/trading-tools/backtest-portfolio.md) form. It opens the mix in the builder.

## PortfolioCharts

PortfolioCharts is a free site by one independent investor who goes by Tyler. It studies simple, long-term portfolios with yearly returns for asset classes, back to 1970, in 12 home countries. Its charts focus on what a saver would live through, such as the worst stretch to wait out and safe withdrawal rates. It does not test single funds or timing rules, and it does not trade.

## AllocateSmartly

AllocateSmartly tracks published [tactical asset allocation](https://tactfolio.com/learn/tactical-asset-allocation.md) strategies, from authors like Faber, Antonacci, and Keller. It says it tracks more than 100. You see each strategy's backtest and current signal, combine strategies, and get email alerts. You can't build your own strategies, and you place the trades yourself. It costs $49 a month or $399 a year, with a free limited view of 3 strategies. Read [AllocateSmartly alternatives](https://tactfolio.com/comparisons/allocatesmartly-alternatives.md).

## Composer

Composer is a no-code app for building and trading strategies, which it calls symphonies. You build with blocks or by chatting with its AI. Backtests use daily adjusted closes, up to 30 years back in the editor. Building and backtesting are free on every plan. To trade, you open a Composer brokerage account, because Composer is also the broker. The free Starter plan automates one strategy. Live trading is for US residents. Read [Tactfolio vs Composer](https://tactfolio.com/comparisons/tactfolio-vs-composer.md).

## How to choose

Results will differ a little from site to site. Data, costs, and [rebalancing](https://tactfolio.com/learn/portfolio-rebalancing.md) days are never quite the same. In our own test of a 60/40 portfolio, Testfolio and Portfolio Visualizer agreed on growth to the dollar but not on the worst drop. Our [portfolio backtesting tools guide](https://tactfolio.com/comparisons/best-portfolio-backtesting-tools.md) shows the numbers.
